Galaxy Girl (she/her)
How did you come up with your name and number?
My derby name started out as a costume character I created in 2013 for Halloween, Mardi Gras, and comic conventions. Since people continuously asked who I was supposed to be, I started telling them I was Galaxy Girl. The name has extra meaning for me since I have tinkered with armature astronomy taking photos of galaxies and other deep sky items through my telescope. But it doesn’t stop there. When I was a young girl, my childhood car was a 1972 Ford Galaxy. I have an out-of-this-world greyhound named Nebula. And Galaxy Quest is one of my favorite movies. My derby number, 73, is “”the Chuck Norris of prime numbers!”” As Sheldon Cooper explains in the Big Bang Theory, 73 is the 21st prime number. Its mirror, 37, is the 12th and its mirror, 21, is the product of multiplying 7 and 3. And in binary 73 is a palindrome, 1001001, which backwards is 1001001.
When did you start playing roller derby/get involved with roller derby? How did you get involved?
I joined roller derby later in life when I was 48 and played my first game at age 51. I skated A LOT as a kid and I don’t know why I ever stopped because it is soooo much fun. I joined Big Easy Roller Derby when looking for people to skate with. And this is my time participating in a team sport.
What does your life look like outside of roller derby?
Even outside of derby, my life is focused on rollers. I am a new product engineer at Intralox who specializes in putting rollers in plastic conveyor belts for supporting e-commerce. Many of the package you receive from UPS, USPS, and Amazon touched a conveyor belt that I designed!
