Skela-Laur (she/her)
How did you come up with your name and number?
When I was a kid I was obsessed with a Skeletor action figure. The idea came to me to be Skela-Laur. I hate that name now and only go by Skela.
When did you start playing roller derby/get involved with roller derby? How did you get involved?
I started my newbie program in 2013 and have been playing ever since. I was listening to the radio on the way home from work and I heard about the local league holding a boot camp that weekend. I showed up with cheap gear, a bike helmet and no skates. I bought a pair that were too big for me off a league member for $50 and skated in those for two years.
Is there another skater that you look up to?
There are a lot of “derby famous” skaters I enjoy watching. One of them is Bonnie Thunders. I’ve always loved her jam style. But my favorite skaters are my teammates.
What kind of skates do you skate on?
Bonds for life!
Do you have any short term or long term Derby Goals?
Stay healthy and keep skating. I used to have a lot of competitive goals pre-Covid, but when we returned to skating the derby landscape was so different. I’m older now and my life is much different than when I started derby at 25. My focus now is to help build and maintain the BERD league and culture.
What position on the track do you play/prefer?
Jammer
What do you like to do after a game?
Eat big meal
Favorite derby memory?
There are a few games that I’ve played where the score was close and I was put in for the last jam. Those close games and the crowd going wild during the last jam are my favorite memories.
What is some advice you’d give to someone who may be interested in joining roller derby?
Do it! Derby is about the community and the people you skate with. You can find a million reasons why you can’t try something new. Just show up!
